Overview

One of the most popular and picturesque Maharashtra mountain hikes during the monsoon season is the Andharban Jungle Trek in the Sahyadri range in the vicinity of Tamhini Ghat. Andharban is called the "Dark Forest" because the forest canopy does not permit much sunlight to reach the trail, leading to an amazing and immersive rainforest trekking experience.

Andharban is a downhill forest trek, which leads the trekkers through the evergreen forests, in a misty valley, across streams, through hidden waterfalls and spectacular viewpoints offering sweeping vistas of the Kundalika Valley. The path starts on the beautiful backwaters of the Bhira dam and passes through some of the most unpolluted area of the Western Ghats.

The forest during the monsoon months is a verdant wonderland with cascading waterfalls, cloudy skies and cool mountain breezes. The hike itself is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, such as deep valleys, peaks, and pristine wilderness, which makes it a popular attraction for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and adventure seekers alike.

The area is also a hotspot for biodiversity, where the trail is home to several species of birds, butterflies, and other rare plants. Each of the adventures provides a different view of the Sahyadri terrain, providing an unrivaled outdoor experience.

The Andharban Jungle Trek has a moderate level of difficulty and it is suitable for beginner trekkers who are physically fit as well as for advanced trekkers. It is accessible from Mumbai and Pune and is one of the best jungle treks in Maharashtra with the combination of adventure, the beauty of nature and a fresh breath of the Western Ghats.
