Overview

Hampi: Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, India, known for its rich historical and architectural heritage. Today, Hampi is a historic site that is home to a number of impressive monuments, intricate stone carvings, and magnificent temple complexes, all of which were constructed during the Vijayanagara Empire's period of prosperity (14th-16th centuries).

Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, is a historic town renowned for its magnificent rock-cut monuments, particularly the Badami Cave Temples. It is also home to several notable structural temples, including the Bhutanatha Temples, Badami Shivalaya, and Jambulingesvara Temple. Nestled amidst striking sandstone cliffs, Badami served as the capital of the early Chalukyas and remains one of Karnataka’s most important heritage destinations.

Badami is closely associated with the legend of Sage Agastya from the Mahabharata. The demon brothers Vatapi and Ilvala used a deadly trick to kill unsuspecting guests—Vatapi would transform into a goat and be served as a meal, only to later emerge from the victim’s stomach, causing death. When Sage Agastya was offered the same meal, he used his extraordinary powers to digest it instantly, preventing Vatapi from re-emerging and thereby destroying the demon. This legendary event is believed to have taken place near present-day Badami, giving rise to the names Vatapi and Agastya Lake, the picturesque water body that lies at the heart of the town.
